Summerfest
On Friday, July 22nd, festivities will begin at the Meetinghouse Park, to kick off the 2016 Summer Fest in downtown Farmington. The knoll just behind the memorial board, to the side of the gazebo, will serve as a performance area dubbed “The Magic Carpet Stage”. This will also be the platform for children’s activities and entertainment on Saturday.

At 4 pm. Friday afternoon, Marcel Chamby and “Old Gold” will begin playing classic rock and blues tunes to get us all in the mood for some great fun. Folks are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets to sit on for picnicking and viewing the evening’s events.

In the Old Courthouse Parking Lot on the other side of Main Street, there will be a food court set up with food trucks and vendors. Participating vendors include Flatlanders BBQ, The Sweet Life Kettle Corn, El Toro Mexican Food, Fresh Ella’s Ice Cream, Fiddlestick Farm, and Slush Express Italian Ice.  These will remain in the “Old Courthouse Food Court” for both Friday evening and all day Saturday.

At 5 pm Friday, Sue Jones will emcee a trivia contest: “So You Think You Know Farmington”. There will be several trivia questions and prizes for the winning answers.  Bring your historical and geographical knowledge of Farmington and maybe learn some little known facts about your community!

Farmington’s Got Talent, our very own community talent show, will begin at 6 pm on the Magic Carpet Stage. The talent show is open to all ages from 1 to 100. If anyone is older than that, they automatically win the contest, just by showing up!  Acts will be limited to 5 minutes. An entry can be an individual or a group. Participants are highly encouraged to sign up soon, as space will be limited. It’s free to enter! You have nothing to lose but your inhibitions! Registration forms are available at Minikins at 218 Broadway. There will be a sound system with microphone(s) and even someone to accompany on guitar, if desired.

A panel of three judges will moderate the contest: community members Tom Ward – RSU 9 superintendent, Tom Saviello – Republican State Senator, and Lorna Niedner – VP of Lending and Main Office Manager of Franklin Savings Bank. The judging will be based on the following criteria: Overall Performance, Audience Response, Stage Appearance, Originality, and Personality. Those with the highest combined scores in different age categories will win prizes! Everyone in the community is encouraged to come out and show us what you’ve got!

At 7:30 our Summer Fest Evening Concert will begin, featuring “The Sunday Project,” a lively 8-piece combo/ensemble from the Skowhegan area. In 2015, The Sunday Project played on Broadway for our street dance and was very well-received. The band plays mostly old swing music from the Big Band era, and old standards like “Surfing, USA”. More information about the members of The Sunday Project can be found online at https://www.facebook.com/SundayProjectJazz.

Food will be on sale in the food court till 9 pm. Bring the whole family for an exciting night of summertime fun and get ready for the big day-long festival on Saturday! Stay tuned for more Summer Fest news!
