Industry
Industry is a recreational and bedroom community. The 800-acre Clearwater Lake is the jewel in the crown of the town, but legend has it that Industry was named for the character of its people making the founders the real jewels.
The town was founded six miles northeast of Farmington along Rt. 43 in 1803 and many of the descendants of those first settlers still live around the lake.
Like many area communities, Industry's population peaked at more than 1,000 around 1850 but the Civil War and the subsequent move westward resulted in a population decline.
Clearwater Lake is just that clear. It dominates the town, and provides a truly four-season recreational area. The lake has a small sandy beach, reflects Autumn's foliage magnificently and is a haven for ice fishermen, to say nothing of the brave souls of the Polar Bear Club who take a dip on Chester Greenwood Day each December. Ice shacks can be found scattered across the lake during the winter.
Townspeople participate in an annual �ice-out� contest on Clearwater Lake from March to April . The fire department also hosts a muster, with skill competition and a chicken barbecue, the first Saturday in August.
The town has two convenience stores and two churches, Shorey Chapel and West Mills Community Church.
